Types of Abrasive Tools and Discs



Grinding wheels are abrasive tools used for surface modification. Some are used for cutting materials and some are used for polishing, deburring, sanding, and finishing. The type of abrasive material used determines its hardness, relative resistance, and friability. Common abrasive materials include aluminum and silicon compounds. These abrasive materials are available in different types and sizes.


Non-Woven Abrasive Cloth

A non-woven abrasive product may be designated as 8 A/O MED, where A is the abrasive substance and MED is the medium density. In general, the higher the density, the faster and finer the cut. Softer densities, on the other hand, conform to the workpiece surface and load less. These characteristics allow for a significant labor savings.



Non-woven abrasive cloth is typically supplied in jumbo rolls in a range of grades, from light-duty to heavy-duty. Flap Discs

The abrasive disc is used to shape and finish metal surfaces by exposing new layers of abrasive material as they wear. This process produces a consistent finish while extending the disc life.
